He said, “No, I think that was my best performance out there. We get better every time, right?
So, what makes a great fight? It’s not as simple as just black and white. A great fight includes a mix of several factors like adversity, determination, durability, skill, and toughness. It needs to be competitive and of course, it needs to be fan-friendly. It can be any fight, big or small, main event or prelims opener, respectful or heated rivalry, strawweight or heavyweight, UFC or Titian FC. But in this article, we’ll look to list five of the best fights to ever take place in the welterweight division.
Keeping that criterion in mind, dozens of the best welterweight fights were analyzed and a whole lot of violence was consumed. It was quite enjoyable, but it was far from easy to narrow it down to just five.
With that being said, here are two honorable mentions with respect to the best welterweight fights ever.
Matt Huges vs. Frank Trigg 2 – UFC 52
A must-watch for any fight fan and one of the most electrifying comebacks in UFC history. Often regarded as one of the UFC’s greatest fights, Hughes vs. Trigg 2 was inducted into the Fight Wing of the UFC Hall of Fame in 2015.
Nick Diaz vs. Takanori Gomi – PRIDE 33
A young 23-year-old Nick Diaz’s one and only fight with the PRIDE promotion was a wild one. While in the face of adversity early on with a brutal cut on his face, Diaz would weather the storm, battle back, and secure a rare gogoplata to submit Gomi in the second round.

It is always interesting to see how a fighter handles a loss. Fans often learn more about fighters after a loss than they do after an emphatic win. However, when the losses start to pile on, it becomes more difficult for the fighter to get mentally and physically ready for the next fight. The same applied to Max Holloway while he was preparing for his fight against Calvin Kattar.
Going into the bout, he was on a two-fight skid. Although many believed that he did not lose the rematch against Volkanovski, officially he was still 0-2 in his last two fights.
Therefore, both fans and pundits alike wondered how he would bounce back against a tough opponent like ‘The Boston Finisher’. Unsurprisingly, like has done multiple times in the past, ‘Blessed’ Holloway put on an impressive display to secure a resounding unanimous decision victory. Many considered it as his best performance in a UFC octagon.
Max Holloway makes a bold statement regarding his last fight
In a recent interview, Ariel Helwani asked Max Holloway if he thought his last fight against Calvin Kattar was his best performance to date. He said, “No, I think that was my best performance out there. We get better every time, right? That’s what we did. And to do it against a guy like Calvin Kattar who many hold him as one of the great boxers, not in our division but all of UFC.”
‘Blessed’ continued, “To have that performance against him was great. But, like I’ve been telling everybody, it takes two man, It takes two to tango. Calvin deserves just as much praise as I do. He was in there taking it, he was in there giving it. Nothing but respect to him. But I really believe that was my best performance for sure… I just felt like I was untouchable in there”
Fans would certainly agree with this statement as it seemed as though Holloway had attained ‘God-mode’.
‘Blessed’ has been in the UFC since 2012. In that time he has put on some incredible performances against the very best at 145-pounds. Though he has come out on top quite frequently, Holloway has always bounced back strongly after a setback. This is what makes his performance against Kattar a bit more special.
Do you agree with Max Holloway’s statement? Was his fight against Kattar his best performance to-date?
