I’m the CTO and developer of Poker Fighter — an artificial intelligent poker training software. In this post I’ll explain some basics about poker bots, how they work, what’s the theory behind their strategy and how it’s all related to designing a poker training software.
Poker Bots
Designing Poker-Fighter’s brain is a task that is very similar to the creation of a PokerBot. PokerBot is a computer program that plays poker without the need of human intervention. Just like in Chess where you can play “VS. Computer”, there are computer programs that are smart enough to play Poker by themselves.
Poker is not a “solved” game. Game Theorists still haven’t discovered the optimal strategy to create an unbeatable PokerBot. Other games like Backgammon are already solved, and computer programs today can tell you what is the optimal move at any spot.
I discovered Poker 10 years ago. Due to my competitive personality, I instantly started reading instructional poker material: books, articles, tutorial videos, poker forums, etc. Having a real passion for the game, combined with my skills as a software engineer, pretty soon I’ve found myself designing my own PokerBot. There is a vast amount of academic information about PokerBots for Texas Hold’em. Ivy league universities host yearly Poker Tournaments between PokerBots. At those days, when I created my own bot, I conducted a deep research at this field, and went through the code of a lot of open-source PokerBot projects. Popular examples are: OpenHoldemBot and PokerPirateBot.
Pirate Bot is Coming! Arrrrr!
Game Theory Optimal
When game theorists try to solve a game, they are trying to design an Unexploitable Strategy. Game Theory Optimal (GTO), in poker terms, means finding a strategy where your opponents can’t exploit any of your decisions. This link is an example of such strategy regarding Pre-Flop Raises, Re-Raises, Re-Re-Raises and the corresponding reactions to each of them.
The biggest problem with GTO strategies is that by definition — A GTO strategy is never an adaptive strategy. It never adapts itself to the opponent’s game. The reason behind it is that if you would change your strategy according to what you have seen so far from your opponent, the opponent could potentially exploit you and change his own strategy just before you adapt to him.
But poker experts always tell us that the key for poker is adjusting to your opponents, so how does these two conflicting concepts add up? The answer lies in the fact that we are playing against human beings and not against sophisticated computer programs. Applying an adaptive strategy against humans, even though it’s theoretically exploitable, will be the most profitable strategy in the majority of the poker tables. Profiting at poker is all about Table Selection. You don’t need to be the best in the world, you just need to play against players who are worse than you. We can let the game theorists continue researching for an unexploitable strategy in their ivory towers, while we apply our adaptive strategies in the casino.

Poker Fighter’s Strategy
Poker-Fighter is designed to teach a strategy for beating online poker games up to 0.25$-0.50$ and live casino poker games up to 1$-3$. One of the key characteristics of players that play at these stakes is that they use a very exploitable strategy and they don’t try to exploit other players’ leaks. Also, thanks to years of experience and millions of hands we played against these type of players, we gained a lot of knowledge about their tendencies and thought process. Without any information about a player at these stakes, I can assume he:
- Calls Preflop with too many hands.
- Re-Raises Preflop with a strong range of hands.
- Rarely Raises bets on the flop as a Bluff.
- Plays Passively in all betting streets.
- And more.
Game Theory Optimal Poker Software
These horribly exploitable behaviors are a fertile ground for Poker-Fighter’s strategy. We designed the poker engine to optimally exploit these leaks. You’re welcome to try it out yourself and get free expert feedback on your game.
